In order that any of these instructions be meaningful,
one needs to practice on a real instrument. Unfortunately, these devices are
in museums and private collections but it is possible to make a cardboard sector
and experiment with it. From the photographs, it is clear that one need not
sacrifice style in construction.

The file galileo.pdf is a drawing of all of the sector surfaces that can be printed out on an ordinary printer. The printout is sprayed with spray adhesive and fastened to card stock. The pieces are cut out with an X-acto knife against a metal ruler. The curves are made with X-acto gouges nibbling through the curves. To keep the sector from getting dirty, seal it with a few coats of spray polyurethane. It may be desirable to use a nylon screw at the hinge. This would allow a pin vise to drill a hole through for a thread. Note the figures below for the assembly.

The photos above show the tools used. Spray polyurethane, spray adhesive, gouges, blades, and a straight edge. Click the image to download a pdf copy to construct your own sector. You may need a copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader at their web site http://www.adobe.com/main.html.
